A DIRECTORY OF TWIN CITIES
A Partial List is Here Submitted for Your Inspection. Look for Errors, and When You Find Them Tell Us. We Want to Know Them All.
Below we give a partial list of the names, as they will appear in the directory for the twin cities to be issued in January. The list published today includes all the names of persons over 15 years of age who reside in Grand Rapids, in the letters A, B and C, together with their occupation and the street and number of their residence. We ask all to carefully examine this list, and if they find any errors or omissions of any nature whatever to report same to this office at once. By doing this, you will increase the value of the work and aid us in making it an accurate record, which will truly represent the business and commercial interests of the two cities. The work is taking much time and no small expense, and the people should aid us in every possible way, as it is for the mutual benefit of every resident.

A DIRECTORY OF TWIN CITIES
A Partial List Is Here Submitted for Your Inspection. Look for Errors, and When
You Find Them Tell Us. We Want to Know Them All.
Introductory
The first general directory of the Twin Cities is herewith presented to the
public for its judgment, with full confidence that it will receive its just due
at their hands. In the compilation of such a work, it is but natural that errors
will occur, but it is hoped that such as may appear will not seriously cripple
its usefulness.
In addition to the names of inhabitants, will be found a very full and
complete business directory, a list of city and county officials, and important
information concerning schools, churches, secret societies, etc. which cannot
but be of interest to any one seeking information in regard to the cities.
For the convenience of those not familiar with our system of numbering, it will
not be out of place at this time to give a limited explanation.
FOR GRAND RAPIDS
All streets running east are numbered from the river or Front street, commencing
with 100, second 200, etc. Oak street being the longest running east and west
and nearest the center of the city, was selected as the dividing line for all
streets running north and south, viz: All streets south of Oak street will be
designated as South High, South Milwaukee, etc., and those north as North High
street etc., each commencing with 100. If Mr. Jones lives at 1721 South High
street he lives in the seventeenth block from Oak street going south.
IN CENTRALIA
The River will be the starting point going west, block commencing with one
hundred, and so on.
Cranberry street (the street leading to the bridge) will be the dividing line or
starting point for all streets running north and south, such streets will be
designated as North and South French street, etc. Each block will represent a
hundred and by refering [sic] to the directory you can readily tell just how far
and how many blocks away any resident lives. Thus to illustrate: Lemley, J. W.,
carpenter, 913 Cranberry street. Mr. Lemley lives in the ninth block from the
river. Even numbers on the left hand side, odd on the right hand.
Since the canvass for the names contained in the directory was completed there
has [sic] been some changes, no doubt, as there always are in works of this
kind, but an effort has been made to have it as complete as possible up to the
time of going to press.
