What I Have Missed by Not Going to the Library

Many children have told me I was missing a great many things by not going to the library. I have often told them that the library could not help me in any way. They told me that there was a story hour every Saturday afternoon but I told them I didn’t like baby stories. One day they came over and told me the story that they had heard. I liked it so much I told them that I would go the next time they went. The next Saturday they came after me so I went with them. When I got there I was surprised to see all the good books. There were posters hanging on the walls. I picked out a book to read at home. It was time for the story hour so I stayed. Then I looked at the magazines and books lying on the table. I found everything very interesting. It was getting near supper time so we went home. When I got home my mother asked me if I liked to go to the library. I told her "Yes." I told my sister about it so she wanted to come with me. I told her she could because I had missed a great many things and I didn’t want her to. Now I always go to the library every Saturday afternoon. It has helped me in the reading circle work, geography, history, and many other ways. I wish every boy and girl could go to the library and enjoy everything as I do.

Value of the Library to the Public

The T. B. Scott Library of this city is of great value to us though few people realize it. There are many books on history, nature, geography, fiction, art, biography, engineering and in fact every kind you would want. These books are very helpful to men who wish to know more about subjects such as science, electricity, or inventions.

The library also has a large collection of mounted birds and animals. These animals are very interesting and a person does not always get a chance to study their markings, size of body, size and shape of the feet and wings.

The library has two large reading rooms; one for children and one for adults. The children’s room is equipped with scrap books, fairy tales and fiction. The adult room is supplied with magazines, newspapers, fiction, history and biography.

Every Saturday the librarian or assistant librarian tells stories at 2 p.m. to children too small to read books.

The Use of the Library

The library has done a lot for me and will do it for you. I will tell you what it has done for me. It has lent me books and will lend you books. You can find most any book you want. I have taken many books from the library. And every book I read was interesting. You have two weeks to read a book and if you can read fast you can take it back and get more books. You can take quite a few books to read. The public library is on the East side and we have a branch library on the West side. We want a bigger library on the West side and if all of the people would get books we would have a bigger library. it is for the big people as well as the little people. Let’s work to have a bigger library.

I like the Branch Library because it is not far from my home. It is of great use to us for we can get books that we like. If we hadn’t this library I could not take books because the T. B. Scott Library is too far from my home. It helps us in our studies. It is useful to the big people for they can get books as well as children. I like the reading tables, too, for if we do not want to take a book we can enjoy ourselves reading or looking at pictures there. The librarian will help us choose a good book for we can not always tell the books for children.
