Children & The Internet

To encourage safe and productive Internet use by minors, the McMillan Memorial Library offers the following services.

  1. Trained Library staff is available to assist patrons in using the Internet.
  2. The Library provides classes on how to use the Internet. The monthly sessions are free.
  3. The Library has prepared a subject guide to recommended sites. This guide is the home page for computers in the Library.
  4. Internet access in the Children’s room is filtered. A special home page with recommended sites for children has been prepared by Library staff.
  5. Minors can use the unfiltered Internet stations in the Adult, YA and Lobby areas. Parents can request that their child be denied use of these stations or all Library Internet stations.
  6. The Library recommends several on-line resources for parents.
  7. Patrons must register to use the Internet. No anonymous use is allowed.
  8. The Library Board has adopted an Acceptable Use Policy which states (in part): "Users will not send, receive or display text or graphics which may reasonably be construed as obscene." The complete AUP is posted near each public computer and on the Library's website.
  9. Any crime or illegal activity witnessed by library staff or patrons will be reported to the police.
